Decadal Shift in Summer Precipitation Variability over East Asia in the Mid-2000s and Wave Propagation toward North America

چکیده
Abstract The East Asian summer climate displays a marked change after the late 1990s. This is principally due to weakening of Pacific–Japan (PJ) teleconnection pattern that was dominant driver precipitation variability over Asia. Nevertheless, western Japan has frequently experienced heavy rainfall events past several years. Atmospheric reanalysis and observational datasets are used investigate Asia in view interdecadal changes from 1979 2020. increased most Japan, especially around Southwest Islands southern where cumulus convection been more for characteristic including mei-yu–baiu than frontal structure since mid-2000s. analysis vertical structures convective instability indicates moist neutralized by China Sea off Pacific coast recent warming sea surface temperature (SST) along Kuroshio exceeds SST threshold convection. decadal shift close relationship with second mode Asia, which taken place PJ as leading decade. enhanced enabled act forcing mechanism Rossby wave train toward North America westerly jet or eastward extension Silk Road pattern, possibly favors heatwave Northwest areas America.

Dynamics of Interannual Variability in Summer Precipitation over East Asia*
The summertime mei-yu–baiu rainband over East Asia displays considerable interannual variability. A singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis for interannual variability reveals that precipitation anomalies over the mei-yu–baiu region are accompanied by in situ anomalies of midtropospheric horizontal temperature advection. Anomalous warm (cool) advection causes increased (decreased) mei-yu–ba...
متن کاملDecadal Variability of Precipitation over Western North America
Decadal (.7yr period) variations of precipitation over western North America account for 20%–50% of the variance of annual precipitation. Spatially, the decadal variability is broken into several regional [O(1000 km)] components. These decadal variations are contributed by fluctuations in precipitation from seasons of the year that vary from region to region and that are not necessarily concent...
متن کاملMid‐2000s North Atlantic shift: Heat budget and circulation changes
Prior to the 2000s, the North Atlantic was the basin showing the greatest warming. However, since the mid-2000s during the so-called global warming hiatus, large amounts of heat were transferred in this basin from upper to deeper levels while the dominance in terms of atmospheric heat capture moved into the Indo-Pacific. Here we show that a large transformation of modal waters in the eastern No...
متن کاملDiurnal Cycle of Summer Precipitation over Subtropical East Asia in CAM5
The simulations of summertime diurnal cycle of precipitation and low-level winds by the Community Atmosphere Model, version 5, are evaluated over subtropical East Asia. The evaluation reveals the physical cause of the observed diurnal rainfall variation in East Asia and points to the source of model strengths and weaknesses. Two model versions with horizontal resolutions of 2.88 and 0.58 are us...
متن کاملA role of the Atlantic Ocean in predicting summer surface air temperature over North East Asia?
Simulations performed with Ocean–Atmosphere General Circulation Models (OAGCM) under the Climate Model Intercomparison Project, phase 5 (CMIP5) (Taylor et al. 2012), provide climate predictions for the upcoming 100 years (the so-called radiative concentration pathways emission scenarios). However, CMIP simulations suffer from severe limitations in predicting climate at a shorttime horizon (< 10...
